The Ten Toes Board Emporium brand comes with a reputation in skating community as providing an affordable, but also a dependable product for new users on a budget and the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard is no different.

The brand also embodies the California culture from the sixties in both appearance and design. The surfer culture comes through in the presence of the board, but also the feel. Riding down a hill on the Zed Bamboo Longboard feels incredibly similar to riding a wave on a surfboard.

Generally, most of the boards included with the company offer a tight, inflexible riding style. Some seasoned riders may not like this tightness when it comes to weaving back and forth down large hills.

But we find that most novice rider generally appreciates the added level of control comes with the tight gears on the board. The Ten Toes Board Emporium company also makes the Zed Bamboo Longboard out of environmentally conscious materials.

The bamboo material offers a more sustainable deck material than other types of wood usually included with longboards. It also provides a healthy amount of flexibility when using the device.

How Ten Toes Longboards Compare with Other Brands

In this section of the Ten Toes longboard review, we compare the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard with two other popular brands. Specifically, we compare it with the Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser and the White Wave Bamboo Longboard.

We selected these brands because they represent an affordable alternative for people who think the Ten Toes Brand is not for them. They also help us identify some of the strengths and weaknesses associated with the brand.

1) Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser

The Volador brand is another longboard company that offers excellent beginner products. If you do not like the traditional surfer styles associated with the Ten Toes brand, then we think you will love the twelve different styles the Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser.

They cover everything from Eastern fish designs, to cosmic planetary alignments. The board also features a drop through deck design, which makes it more ideal for hills and half pipes.

The Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser costs sixty-six dollars, which makes it roughly the same price as the Ten Toes brand. Like the Ten Toes model, the Volador features standard bearings that will probably need replacing soon after purchase.

However, the overall design is much lighter than the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard – almost two pounds altogether. However, this lack of weight also makes it more restrictive against more significant individuals.

Anyone over two hundred and fifty pounds should not ride the Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser.

2) White Wave Bamboo Longboard

If you do not mind spending a little more on your longboard, then the White Wave Bamboo Longboard offers a dependable product that can handle a lot tougher hills than the Volador Forty-two Inch Freeride Longboard Complete Cruiser and Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard.

The product costs around one hundred dollars and features similar deck material as Ten Toes brand. But the three-inch difference in length means the White Wave Bamboo Longboard is much more portable and maneuverable. The product also comes with significant improvements in terms of bearings and trucks.

The seven-inch aluminum trucks make carving and turning incredibly easy. Unfortunately, the White Wave Bamboo Longboard does come with some flaws. For one thing, the board weighs nearly ten pounds which makes it the heaviest longboard on this list.

While this feature does mean it can support more significant individuals, it also makes carrying the thing around a bit of a pain. As such, we recommend this product for a beginner or intermediate longboarders who want something that can handle tough hills and courses.

If you want a longboard for transportation and riding, then we recommend getting a cruiser. They are cheaper and much more comfortable in terms of carrying it while not riding.

Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard Pros and Cons

In this section, we will go over some of the things we like about the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard and some things we think could use improvement. We include both user reviews and our own experience with the product so we can get a more objective and complete view of the longboard.

The thing we like most about the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard is the overall feel and color options. Everyone captures the look on an island board from the 50s or 60s, and give it a distinct West Coast/Hawaiian feel.

Even if you outgrow the board in terms of its usefulness, you can still hang it on the wall for some rad art decorations. We also find that the general construction of the longboard fits the riding styles of most new longboards. It rides smooth, does not go too fast, and can handle minor bumps and debris.

The added stability from the wide wheels means less falling and more fun for new riders. If you want a longboard specifically for cruising, then this one is a good option. The price of the longboard is another definite pro.

The board only costs around sixty dollars and offers some of the features of board two times that price. Another benefit of the longboard is it can support larger riders who weigh up to three hundred pounds.

It can handle more weight due to the solid construction of the board, which features a mix of bamboo for appearance and Maplewood for strength.

  • Great style and color options
  • Well constructed for new users
  • Incredibly affordable
  • Can support larger individuals

However, some pretty severe cons come with the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard that we think you should be aware of before purchasing. For one thing, the board material offers almost no flexibility at all — it feels like standing on a stuff wooden board.

While some people might not care about this feature, it makes it difficult for sharp turns and carving. Also, the longboard is not very portable. While the eight-pound weight is manageable (though it is nothing to write home about), the length of the board is what inhibits its maneuverability.

The forty-four inches seems a bit excessive, and it means you can only carry around the board one particular way. The wheels are not great either due to their wideness. Wide wheels mean more friction when you ride. This fact means that you will need to push harder to roll slower.

However, for some new riders who do not want to go fast, this feature may actually act as a benefit. The bearings on the product work all right, but they wear down quickly. As such, we recommend replacing them as soon as possible.

Also, make sure you adjust the trucks before you ride it based on your preference. Some people prefer loose trucks for carving, while others prefer the control of tight trucks. It comes down to preference, but if you get on the board expecting closed trucks, then you might end up getting hurt.

  • Board is hard as a rock
  • Forty-four-inch board too long
  • Generic wheel and plain bearings
  • Trucks too loose for some riders

Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard Review Conclusion

In our opinion, the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard represents an excellent purchase for someone completely new to the hobby. If you never rode a longboard before and feel nervous committing to an expensive product, then the Ten Toes Board will ensure you get your money’s worth.

For only sixty dollars, the products offer a smooth ride and an excellent cruising experience. The overall design of the board helps ensure fewer crashes, and the trucks come loose enough for intensive carving if you desire it.

However, if you rate yourself as at least a moderately skilled longboarder, then we think you should look elsewhere. For one thing, the bearings that come with the product work poorly and will need replacing.

Also, while the wheels help new riders gain a sense of balance, they can slow down more competent riders. As such you will also probably want to replace the wheels. Many experienced players hate the inflexible nature of the product.

While the added level of firmness helps larger riders, it can hinder more high speed and sharp maneuvers. The product also is not great for hills — especially steep ones. As such, we recommend caution before proceeding.

However, we think for the price offered the Ten Toes Board Emporium Zed Bamboo Longboard represents excellent value for new riders. Far from being a cheap Walmart board, the product genuinely provides a lot for any beginner, regardless of their age.

As such, we give it a final rating of four stars out of five stars. We hope this Ten Toes Longboard review helped you decide whether or not the product fits your riding style. For simple transportation and minor hills, we think you could not ask for a better outcome. Good luck during the rest of your shopping process!
